“Damn!” napahawak sa dibdib si Alyssa matapos maisara ang pinto ng kanyang kwarto. Stay-in siya sa Adikterya Mental Institute. Bukod sa iyon ang kondisyong hiningi ng ospital sa kanilang mga nurses doon ay itinuturing rin niyang blessing in disguise ang pagkakataong iyon dahil hindi na siya mahihirapan pang umupa ng kanyang bahay. She was an orphan indeed—and a homeless one at that. She sighed. Bakit ba ganoon ang naging reaksyon niya kanina kay Kristoff? She wasn’t her usual self back then. Napatingin siya sa kanyang laptop. Saglit siyang natigilan. Pagkunwa’y kinuha niya iyon at binuksan. She directly opened the most popular search engine—google. Gamit ang mabibilis niyang mga daliri, she hastily typed in the word Stockholm syndrome.
Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage shows signs of sympathy, loyalty or even voluntary compliance with the hostage taker, regardless of the risk in which the hostage has been placed. The syndrome is also discussed in other cases, including those of wife-beating, rape and child abuse.
The syndrome is named after a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, in which the bank robbers held bank employees hostage from August 23 to August 28 in 1973. In this case, the victims became emotionally attached to their victimizers, and even defended their captors after they were freed from their six-day ordeal, refusing to testify against them. Later, after the gang were tried and sentenced to jail, one of them married a woman who had been his hostage.
A famous example of Stockholm syndrome is the story of Patty Hearst, a millionaire’s daughter who was kidnapped in 1974, seemed to develop sympathy with her captors, and later took part in a robbery they were orchestrating.
"I was kidnapped. Iyon ang ipinalabas nila. Pero ang totoo, I was just saved by my partner. Someone has been trying to kill me. Pero lahat ng tumutulong sa akin ay napapahamak at napapagbintangan. It has to end. I have to know who the culprit is. Kailangan kong malaman kung sino ang may pakana ng mga banta sa buhay ko.”
Biglang bumalik sa alaala niya ang sinabing iyon ni Kristoff. He was defending his captors. Sa kwento ni Sir Rianskie sa kanya, nahuli na raw ang mga kidnappers nito na mga kasamahan din nito sa hukbong sandatahang kinabibilangan nito.
All evidences pointed to his comrades as his captor. Pero si Kristoff mismo ang pumipigil sa lahat na ipakulong ang mga kidnappers nito. As his testimony declared, itinatatwa nito ang mga paratang sa mga kasamahan nitong sundalo.
That started everybody’s doubt about him. Nakidnap ang binata ng higit sa tatlong beses. Una ay ang mga kasamahan nito ang nahuli, pangalawa ay ang dati nitong kasintahang si Yvonne at pangatlo ay ang bestfriend nitong si Mark Alex. The afore-cited captors were all sentenced to be put into jail for more than 20 years.
Subalit sa halip na matuwa ay nagprotesta pa si Kristoff. Natural, nagduda na ang lahat sa inakto ng binata. And when he was finally decided to be put into a Mental Institute, he had tried to escape so many times because he wanted to help his captors and free them.
Nag-aalala ang lahat para sa buhay nito. He’s got tons of death threats. She felt something weird. Based from the things that had happened to him, may kung anong pakiramdam siya na mali roon. She wanted to know the truth. Kaya gagawin niya ang lahat upang magkaroon ng kasagutan ang mga katanungang nagsimula nang bumangon sa kanyang isipan.
Will she succeed? Matutulungan ba niya si Kristoff? O baka hindi na dapat itong tulungan dahil wala naman itong problema kundi ang unti-unting nasisirang pag-iisip nito?
Aminin man niya o hindi, alam niyang sa kabilang banda ay…naniniwala siya sa mga sinabi ni Kristoff.
